Le massacre perpétré par Hamas touche aussi l’Asie.

Passons sur la géographie : Israël est sans doute située en Asie, mais on voit bien que le crime qui vient d’y être commis par Hamas se situe au Proche-Orient. Il concerne cependant le monde entier.

Le monde entier parce que l’État d’Israël, dont la création a été proclamée le 14 mai 1948 après l’approbation par les Nations Unies le 29 novembre 1947 a enfin été reconnu par l’Assemblée générale après une guerre qui a fait 6 000 morts israéliens.

Car Israël s’est d’emblée heurtée au refus arabe ou musulman et cela continue. Comme l’a vécu l’auteur de ces lignes, il n’est pas possible sauf cas très particuliers de voyager dans certains pays d’Asie du Sud-Est : Brunei, Malaisie, Indonésie avec un passeport où a été apposé un visa israélien.

Plus distrayant, pendant longtemps Singapour n’a pu recevoir de délégations israéliennes qu’en les affublant du faux nom de « Mexicains » : Lee Kuan Yew avait suffisamment d’ennuis avec ses voisins musulmans, le non-dit a contribué à préserver la paix.

Aujourd’hui, le massacre perpétré en Israël par Hamas a fait de nombreuses victimes « collatérales ». Parmi elles, des Thaïlandais et des Népalais. On ne sait pas encore combien sont morts, d’autant que la prise d’otages par Hamas risque d’alourdir le bilan.

Au 11 octobre, 20 Thaïlandais sont morts, 13 ont été blessés et 14 enlevés.

Que faisaient-ils là ? Environ 30 000 Thaïlandais travaillent en Israël, la plupart comme ouvriers agricoles dont un grand nombre près de Gaza.

10 Népalais ont été tués dans l’offensive du Hamas en territoire israélien, a annoncé dimanche l’ambassade du Népal à Tel-Aviv.

Pas étonnant quand on sait que des millions de Népalais sont émigrants, profitant de salaires bien plus élevés que dans leur pays, dont ils assurent, par leurs envois de fonds, environ un tiers du PIB, au risque d’y perdre la vie.

Environ 4 500 Népalais travaillent actuellement en Israël comme aides à domicile ou personnes de compagnie.

Par ailleurs, 265 étudiants népalais s’y trouvent dans le cadre d’un programme « Apprendre et gagner sa vie », parrainé par Israël dont 17 logeaient au kibboutz Alumim situé dans le sud d’Israël, cible de l’attaque sans précédent du mouvement islamiste palestinien samedi. C’étaient en effet pour beaucoup des diplômés en agriculture.

Enfin, pour d’autres raisons, le Japon est également concerné, comme en témoigne une rencontre entre l’ambassadeur d’Israël et le vice-ministre administratif nippon qui a condamné « l’acte terroriste » perpétré par le Hamas.

Nous avons écrit par ailleurs en 2021 : « La Chine prétend trouver un accord de paix car la puissance montante de l’Asie la rend nécessaire aussi bien aux Israéliens qu’aux Palestiniens ». Cela n’a manifestement pas été le cas…

Commentaire : on ne peut s’empêcher de rapprocher ce qui s’est passé le 7 octobre dernier du 11 septembre 2001. Comme alors, les terroristes ont tué indistinctement, y compris de nombreux musulmans, sans se préoccuper de savoir qui serait victime de l’effondrement des tours.

Il reste à espérer que les représailles ne produiront pas de résultats aussi désastreux que les suites de l’attentat du « World Trade Center ». Pas sûr que le gouvernement israélien actuel soit en situation de le comprendre.

Never mind the geography : Israel is undoubtedly in Asia, but it is clear that the crime just committed by Hamas is in the Middle East. However, it concerns the whole world.

The whole world because the State of Israel, whose creation was proclaimed on 14 May 1948 after being approved by the United Nations on 29 November 1947, has finally been recognised by the General Assembly after a war that left 6,000 Israelis dead.

From the outset, Israel met with Arab and Muslim rejection, and this continues to this day. As the author of these lines has experienced, it is not possible, except in very special cases, to travel to certain countries in South-East Asia : Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia with a passport bearing an Israeli visa.

More amusingly, for a long time Singapore was only able to receive Israeli delegations by using the false name of "Mexicans" : Lee Kuan Yew had enough problems with his Muslim neighbours, so the unspoken helped to keep peace.

Today, the massacre perpetrated by Hamas in Israel has claimed many "collateral" victims. Among them, Thais and Nepalese. It is not yet known how many have died, especially as the taking of hostages by Hamas is likely to add to the death toll.

As of 11 October, 20 Thais had died, 13 had been injured and 14 kidnapped.

What were they doing there ? Around 30,000 Thais work in Israel, mostly as agricultural labourers, many of them near Gaza.

10 Nepalese were killed in the Hamas offensive in Israeli territory, the Nepalese embassy in Tel Aviv announced on Sunday.

This is hardly surprising, given that millions of Nepalese are emigrants, taking advantage of much higher wages than in their own country, where their remittances contribute around a third of GDP, at the risk of losing their lives.

Around 4,500 Nepalese currently work in Israel as home helpers or companions.

In addition, 265 Nepalese students are in Israel as part of an Israel-sponsored "Learn and Earn" program, 17 of whom were staying at Kibbutz Alumim in southern Israel, the target of the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement on Saturday. Many of them were graduates in agriculture.

Finally, for other reasons, Japan is also concerned, as shown by a meeting between the Israeli ambassador and the Japanese deputy administrative minister, who condemned the "terrorist act" perpetrated by Hamas.

We also wrote in 2021 : "China claims to be seeking a peace agreement because Asia’s rising power makes it necessary for both the Israelis and the Palestinians". This has clearly not been the case...

Comment : one cannot help but compare what happened on 7 October to 11 September 2001. As then, the terrorists killed indiscriminately, including many Muslims, regardless of who fell victim to the collapse of the towers.

It is to be hoped that the retaliation will not be as disastrous as the aftermath of the World Trade Center attack. It is not certain that the current Israeli government is in a position to understand this.
